Dear Harriet,

Here I am at it again tonight. But this time without any interruptions, I hope. Your birthday card arrived today – tell me is that for the next year? Now don’t get sore, I was only kidding. It was damn nice of you to send it, I was really surprised. You’re just a little cheerer-upper aren’t you. By the way, I’m forgetting birthdays from now on, I mean my own of course. I’ve reached the point where I hate to see them come around. Don’t ask me why, you know as well as I do.

I am quite at a loss for something to write tonight. Nothing ever seems to happen in this god forsaken place anymore. Why even if it rains that’s a bit of news. There was a stage show scheduled for this evening, at least that’s what it said on the bulletin board. Nope I a’int agoin’, got to hang around the office for a while, something might come up. Don’t let that Hill-Billy talk give you any ideas, I can speak very good English if I try real hard. I have improved quite a lot in the last few days on account of I read some good books – well not too good. These were written by a certain Thorne Smith, Author of the Topper Series. I must admit it isn’t exactly the kind of stuff a nice fellow like myself should read, but I figure I’m old enough now to find out a few things about life. It is my opinion that the author was under the influence of dope when most of his books were written. I say this because the stuff is just a little off the beam. Maybe that’s why I like it. I’m a little off myself most of the time. One almost has to be to carry on under theses conditions. I don’t know just what conditions I have in mind at the present but of course that’s neither here nor there. Sufficeth to say that there are such conditions. If there weren’t I wouldn’t have taken the trouble to mention them.

By the way, that card of yours was kind of cute. I looked inside thinking that you might have written something there for me, but you hadn’t. Why didn’t you write a few lines huh? I also notice that you don’t write on the back of your photographs either – I mean those three you sent me some time ago. Shucks, most everybody else does. But maybe you’re not like most everyone else, or maybe you just didn’t think of it. Well, I’ll forgive you this time, but don’t let it happen again. I am still looking for those others ones, and they better have writing on the back that’s all I’ve got to say.

My boss captain so-and-so just dropped in, he’s a good old scout. When I say old, I don’t mean in the terms of years, because he isn’t much older than I. We have a great time together, he has a swell sense of humor and boy that’s what you need over here. He wants to go home as badly as I do so every once in a while we get together and cry on each others shoulder. He wants to know who I am writing too. Of course he guessed the answer before I had a chance to tell him. You’d be surprised how many people are interested in you my dear. They can’t seem to understand how I can become so interested in a girl whom I’ve never seen before. I think if they had the chance to read some of your letters they might see the light. Not that I intend to do such a thing. Why I’ll make your name a by-word around here, every time they mention my name they’ll be thinking of yours at the same time.

I just got word that we will be up at the crack of dawn again tomorrow so I’m all for hitting the sack pronto. Of course I won’t run off until I say goodnight in the proper fashion – don’t I just wish I could – I probably wouldn’t ever go to bed then. I guess you’ll just have to dream the rest. Please say hello for me to the proper people and I’ll thank you kindly.

Love

Roy
